May '25 - The George

May '25 - The George

Just steps away from Borough Market, through a large decorative entrance gate, is The George. It unfolds before your eyes on the right-hand side of a rather large courtyard, much like an accordion. It almost appears as though someone has assembled a collection of disparate buildings and glued them together. Fortunately, that’s not the case. In fact, it is the last piece of what was once a three-sided galleried coaching inn. Dating from 1676, it is the last surviving example of its type in London. That alone should draw you there, but there’s so much more on offer.

On this gloriously sunny day, the courtyard is packed with punters watching football on a large outdoor screen. Those not watching are either ensconced in a book with their dog at their feet or playing board games on the outdoor tables. It’s a lot to take in, but let your senses absorb the festivities. Once you’re done, make your way inside, grab a pint and roam the rooms. There are a lot of rooms. My wife and I have chosen a quiet upstairs dining room overlooking the courtyard to have a meal at the end of a long day of walking and sightseeing. It’s a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern-day London. If you listen carefully, you can hear the footsteps of history.
