May '25 – The Duke of Argyll

Tonight would be different. My wife Ann and I typically join one of Vic’s historic pub tours, just as do all the other punters. Some regulars, some visitors to London from near and far, but all looking for a fun night out with friends we’ve yet to meet. The one thing we all have in common is that we love pubs. Sure, it’s nice to have a drink and a chat and learn a little bit about the history behind the place where we find ourselves. But mostly, it’s about experiencing history. It’s about taking in the ambiance of a building where commoners mixed with aristocracy. Where events unfolded before being known to all, the planning of The Great Train Robbery being a perfect example.
There is no better place to do this than “The Duke”. Its grand exterior lamps welcome you into what can only be described as one of the most comfortable pubs in London. Large tables, a fireplace, and private areas on the ground floor make way to an upstairs bar filled with overstuffed chairs and what can perhaps best be described as a Victorian library. It feels like home. So, what’s different, you ask?
Tonight was the culmination of two years of work writing our book, not to mention the countless hours put in by our illustrator, Andie. We were face-to-face with people who not only bought our book but also wanted us to sign it for them. Surreal doesn’t begin to capture the experience. That being said, I wouldn’t have missed it for anything, and to be able to do it in “The Duke” only made it that more special.
